Marc Rosenblum, Political Science Department, was named Robert Dupuy Professor of Pan-American Studies In the fall of 2007. Robert S. Montjoy was named Research Professor in 2007. He also was invited to edit a symposium on elections administration for the journal Public Administration Review and he testified at a congressional subcommittee on the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. John J. Kiefer was elected to the Executive Board of the Southeastern Conference of Public Administration. Michael G. Huelshoff was awarded a German Academic Exchange Service Faculty Research Grant in December 2005. Steven Rick, Associate Professor of Chemistry, and his research group have developed a method to enhance protein folding computer simulations. Dr. David Hui, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, has received four honorary degrees: two from Ukraine, one from Italy, and one from Vietnam.

It is with sadness, but also with celebration, that I write this note about retiring Vice Chancellor for Research Bob Cashner. When one leaves a position as I did in 2001 after 8 years of giving one’s heart and soul to it, there is always a concern that the one who follows might not be able to “keep the dream alive” and to grow it. I have been pleased to observe over these seven years Bob’s accomplishments in both arenas. His comBob Cashner Fishingmitment to enhance research funding and excellent research outcomes has been there, even through the post-Katrina nightmare for any VC for Research – destruction of buildings, equipment, severe challenges in applying for funding and even the “dissing” of researchers for applying from “ground zero” (Let’s hit them when they are down!). He stuck with it and did so in a way that has brought wide ranging appreciation and success. His spirit, his concern for faculty, his sense of humor under the worst conditions both here at UNO, and for him personally with the loss of Fran, put him above most in the kind of support he has been able to give — caring, concern, understanding, encouragement.

Training: Learning about the research process for PI’s, business managers, and you

ORSP is now offering training for the PI’s, business managers, and anyone else interested in learning about the research process. Last fall a new position was filled - Carol Mitton was hired as the Development Coordinator. In January, a lunch chat was held to discuss what ORSP can do for you. An information session on General Fund Cost Share was held on February 19th and 20th in the Lindy Boggs Amphitheater. Information sessions are in the works to discuss the pre-award process, how to develop a budget, and how to write a budget justification. Other sessions are also being developed.

After 35 years of service at UNO, Dr. Robert Cashner is retiring to the higher elevations of North Carolina. Bob joined what was then LSUNO in 1973 as a temporary, part-time instructor of biological sciences. In 1978, he became a tenure track assistant professor and quickly moved through the academic ranks to full Professor status in 1987. In 1993, Bob fell victim to the “administration virus” and accepted the Chair position in the Department of Biological Sciences, where he provided outstanding leadership. Three years later, he was named Dean of the Graduate School. In 2001, Bob was asked to assume the role of Vice Chancellor for Research and Sponsored Programs in addition to his duties as Dean of the Graduate School. Bob has maintained a broad perspective in this job supporting research and scholarship across the university. Extramural funding increased significantly under his guidance, and he and his staff have worked diligently to better serve the university community. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Bob personally transported graduate students to the University of Houston and the University of Oklahoma where he had found support for them to continue their studies. Working from Baton Rouge, the Jefferson Center, and staff members’ homes, he also supported the research and scholarly work of faculty who were scattered nationwide. All this time his house was under 10 feet of water.
New Office of Research Organizational Structure

UNO has seen a significant increase in the number of proposals and awards, in addition to increased compliance regulations from funding and regulatory agencies. Since the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) is no longer overseeing the financial administration of awards, we have reorganized our infrastructure to better support UNO’s research community in pre-award and post-award functions.
New Sponsored Programs Accounting Reorganization

The Office of Financial Services assumed the maintenance and operations of the University’s Research Accounting Office in July of 2007. All financial functions related to grants and contracts are under the purview of the Vice Chancellor of Financial Services.
Some of the activities overseen by this group include: entering budgets in PeopleSoft, approving 101’s and other charges, percent effort reporting, recording tuition charges on grants, invoicing and all other financial duties.

UNO Research Professors
Bruce Gibb, Department of Chemistry; Robert Montjoy, Department of Political Sciences; Barbara Herlihy, Department of English; and Diana Hulse-Killacky, Department of English, were named Research Professors for the period of Fall 2007 – Spring 2010. No appointments were made for the period of Fall 2006-Spring 2009, due to Hurricane Katrina.
UNO Alumni Association Awards for Excellence in Research
The UNO Alumni Association offers two awards annually for Excellence in Research. One award is for Early Career Achievement and the other is for Career Achievement.
